What is a WordPress Theme?
Wordpress is one of the most popular website building tools. What makes it so popular is the ability to use themes and plugins. A theme, within the context of WordPress, is a collection of templates and stylesheets used to customize the way your site is presented. A theme can be managed within the WordPress admin area. You can find it in the Appearance>Themes area. Each theme has its own features, design, and layout. Themes are tailored directly towards specific types of sites, whether it be photography, blogging, or cooking etc.
Where can you find Free WordPress Themes?
There are multiple online marketplaces where trusted WordPress themes can be purchased or downloaded for free. We will discuss how find these themes, and how to choose a theme that is safe to use using the WordPress directory of themes.
It is best to pick a theme that has an active development/support team, and is acquired through properly licensed channels. If you download a theme from an untrusted source, or download a theme which has been pirated, your site will likely be hacked and have malware inserted into it.
So, how do you know if you have found a theme which can be trusted?
Step 1: Choose a Theme from one of these Directories:
Step 2: Check the theme reviews:
Generally, a good WordPress Theme will have good reviews. It is important to check the reviews, and read what active users have to say.
Step 3: Check the number of Active Installs:
As a general rule, WordPress Themes and Plugins which have a large number of active installs are usually safe to use. There is power in numbers.
Step 4: Check how often the Theme is updated:
A Theme is updated by the developers when there is a major WordPress update, or when there are bugs in the development which need to be resolved. Make sure that the WordPress Theme has been updated in the past 3-6 Months. Any longer than that, and your website will be at risk of being hacked and having malware injected into it.
