How to create a WordPress Staging Site using Plesk

This post was written to help our customers (and others) who are looking to easily create a WordPress Staging Site/Environment using Plesk Obsidian.

A staging site/environment is an exact copy of your live site or top level domain served through a subdomain. The staging site serves a complete version of your production site, independent from each other.

The process of creating a Staging Site in Plesk is automated and involves 2 phases. Phase 1 includes creating the staging area. Phase 2 includes syncing the staging site to your live site. So, let’s get started!

Phase 1: Create The WordPress Staging Site in Plesk

Step 1: Login to your Plesk Control Panel, and navigate to “websites and domains”.
Step 2: In the WordPress Panel, select “Clone”.
Step 3: Name your subdomain “staging” and select “Start”.
Step 4: Close the window by selecting the “Close” button.

You are done!

Phase 2: Sync The WordPress Staging Site to The Live Site in Plesk

When you are done testing plugin and theme updates in your staging site, follow these steps to sync the changes to the live site:

Step 1: Login to your Plesk Control Panel, and navigate to “websites and domains”.
Step 2: In the WordPress Panel, select “Copy Data”.
Step 3: Select your live site domain. Check the box for Files and Database, All Tables, and Create a restore point. Then select the “Start” button.
Step 4: Close the window by selecting the “Close” button.

You are done!
